Enid was an American writer of metaphysical books which included, Develop Your Psychic Skills, Huna: A Beginners Guide, and Hands: A Complete Guide to Palmistry. She died January 21, 2000 at the age of 82.  Her work was highly influenced by the writing of another author of metaphysical books, Max Freedom Long. He authored many books including, The Secret Science at Work: New Light on Prayer, Growing into Light: A Guidebook in Huna Magic, and Self Suggestion and the New Huna Theory of Mesmerism and Hypnosis.

Enid Hoffman was the first intellectual to grab my attention at the University of Connecticut. I attended an Inner College talk on the topic of Biorhythms. The Inner College was an opportunity for students to attend lectures that were not part of their college curriculum. My early childhood fantasy of “being a doctor” placed a topic like Biorhythms on my radar.  (I was dreaming big like most children). Enid’s talk was fascinating, but I was more fascinated with the speaker than the topic. She said things that were way outside of my comprehension, and I wanted to know more about what she knew. I listened to what Enid said about biological rhythms and concluded that most processes in life are cyclical and that rhythm is a principle of life. I still think that way. I approached Enid after the presentation to invite her to speak at my college dormitory.

I had worked my way up to becoming a dormitory Resident Assistant (RA) by this time. Enid was a Resident Advisor who oversaw a “House” on UConn’s campus. She was a small bodied white Anglo-Saxon protestant female with white frosty-gray hair who looked like someone’s granny. She was a thin woman with incredible energy, and I quickly associated her with great wisdom. I found her to be friendly, highly intuitive, and mind-expanding. We made plans for her to speak to my dorm floor residents at that first Inner College talk.  She and I became immediate life-long friends and she affectionately referred to me as “my Rick.”

She was indeed the mother of an “All-Girl” house.  She ran the House and shared a wealth of knowledge at the same time. I was eager to be around her. Driving her (or driving with her) to her speaking engagements became an integral part of my campus life. She spoke on a wide array of esoteric topics, and the more I listened, the more my thinking expanded into cosmic realms.
